There are two seperate answers to this question.

One is the bank and the other is the merchants.

If you bounce checks and do not pay the checks and the fees, the bank will close your account. Then they will either go after you for the amount that you owe them in fees or overdrawn checks that they have paid, or hire a collection agency. There could be a possiblity of being sued over it.

For the bounced checks that you wrote to a merchant, if the merchant cannot get paid they will turn it over to your states district attorney.

Then, depending on your state, you can be facing a stiff fine and/or prison time.

Both the bank and the merchants may be listed as negatives on your credit reports for 7 years which will make it difficult to get credit, to get decent rates on credit etc.

Plus, you will be listed on ChexSystems for 5 years and it will be difficult to get another checking account.

So, take very good care of your checking account. Make sure you enter everything in it every day and that you balance it out every month when you get your statement. echo

Yes, the bank still wants their money back and this has likely been reported on your credit report. You will not find it too easy to open a future bank account. Only in a dream-world would a debt just "go away" ........... be responsible and own up to this and pay it back; save yourself a mountain of grief! CactusFlower

It will definitely affect you when trying to open accounts elsewhere....you now have a bad mark on your credit history....

I suggest you make good on the overdraw, plus fees and penalties I am certain the bank assessed. And ask that the bank please report this on your credit.

As for the bank just writing it off, depends on how much it is and how much you are financially worth.

Take care to be more mindful in the future, dear one. Good luck! rrrevils

A bank will not close and forget an account that is overdrawn. They will freeze it and can take legal action against you to get their money and it will definately affect your credit rating. Bring the balance back up to $0.00 and then close it. pleeks

You will not be able to get credit or a new account. Everything goes on your credit report and no bank will want you. denmarks
