Leela asked: I started out with two mutual funds. When I transferred them to a new investment company those two funds were used to buy three new mutual funds. This year I sold all three funds. I’m using turbo tax and I understand how to report the three I sold but I really lost on how to report the first two I had and never actually got any cash for.
There were no gains or losses on them so I’m not sure how to enter the information. Help!

James E asked: I’ve successfuuly worked in the the insurance business for the past 4 years, captive to my current company due to my current contract. I have thought about going out on my own as a totally independent agent offering Life/Health/Accident, (including long term care) but I also am interested in financial and estate planning. How do you become licensed “independently” to broker mutual funds/stocks?
I do not want to be tied to one company, selling on that companies needs instead of my client’s needs. I feel being totally independent is the only way for me to go.
Suggestions? Comments? Answers?

There are several banks out thre which also offer brokerage services. some of the banks may declare bankruptcy due to the credit crisis. I have mutual funds in one of those banks. The funds are holdings of all kinds of stock so I would assume they continue to exist. Or am I wrong? Please advise.

My 401K is currently in mutual funds and has dropped in value over the last 60 days. Having had negative experiences in the stock market in the past, I am thinking of moving to a more secure investment source. What would that source be?

I read that immigrants that become permanent residents in Canada, and that enter the labor market at a mature age (30+, 40+), and that retire at the normal retirement age of 65 or 67, are entitle to a portion only of Canada’s retirement funds. The reasoning behind it is that because they have not contributed as long as a native Canadian or another immigrant that had entered the labor market at an earlier age, they cannot withdraw equal amount of funds. If it is so, is there a % of the “normal pension” that an immigrant would receive in retirement funds depending on his/her age at the time he started working in Canada? Are there investment options, like in the USA (mutual funds, 401K, IRA, etc), to make up for the difference of what a native Canadian could receive at a retirement age?

As you know, if Bank of America and Citigroup gets nationalized, they say the stocks value with go to 0. Assuming this does happen, I have a few mutual funds (cwicx, irfax, and ithax ,to be exact) in a non-ira account in smithbarney, which is within the citigroup group. What will happen to these funds?
