I am thinking of taking out a Vodafone mobile broadband contract here in the UK. Although not essential it would at times be useful to use it for banking/shopping. Would this be risky?

Make sure you use an encrypted setup and you will be fine.
There is not much money to be made cracking private routers. The crooks go for cracking company networks, especially networks that handle lots of credit card transactions. It takes the same amount of work and is a lot more lucractive johntrottier
