How much money should I allow to backpack around Europe?
george l asked:
I am planning to travel to Europe for around 3 months and am wondering how much money I should allow, in total. I will be travelling around many countries, (Britain, Germany, France, Belgium, Greece, Italy, Spain etc), and will stay in youth hostel type accomadation. Thanks

Hostals in Spain are cheap and range from 15€ a night… when ever you can sleep on a train =) the train stations have changing rooms and shower… for example if you go from Madrid to Pamplona… sleep on the train and during San Fermín all the tourists that can’t get rooms sleep in the parks =)
But I’d say you could live off less than 20€ a day for food, drinks and showers… so then you’d have to work out what you want to do… the transport and the entery price
I’d go with a friend or somthing…

Excluding travel costs, I’d say you’re going to need about 25 to 30 Euros a day. Britain is not cheap, nor are most of the other countries you’ve mentioned. You could look into working holidays with the National Trust of England if you’d like to save some money there. Scotland has the same program. It also helps to stay out of the larger cities, although that’s where the fun is.

Well, the countries you are planning to visit can be quite expensive so you’ll have to work hard to find good, cheap hostels and places to eat etc.
I would allow about $2000USD a month for that trip. You can check hostel prices in advance and rail pass costs at
