Do you give money or food to a homeless person?
I’m Here To Help asked:
Some of them would just go and give them money,
and some would give them food.

Food, you know it goes to a good place.
But what if they are actually saving the money for something they can use.
Not just alcohol.

I have given both. But I don’t give so much anymore because I see the same group of people working the streets. But if I see someone trying to buy food at the store or a fast food place and they are counting change and I can see that they are having a hard time. I will help them out, without them asking for a hand out.

It would be a nice thought to even offer anything. I would give them food. You never know what they would spend the money on, and I wouldn’t take the chance.

People assume that if you are homeless you are an alcoholic and that you will use that money for alcohol and some do but I was homeless last year due to no job and bad health and there were no shelters..NONE that had any beds anywhere…Some people are just down on their luck. If I had the money, I would give them money…I can’t control what they do with it but at least I know I helped them and I feel better..but with health care cost, fuel cost, etc.. a LOT more people are going to be homeless. There are rental assistance programs but most are for people over the age of 60..and ALL have a waiting list of 6 months to 5 years.. minimum.

I do. Even when in traffic, if I just stopped to pick up something quick to snack on and see one at the stop light, I roll my window down and give it to them. Not so much money though, unless it is to an organization.

I’ve given a few dollars to a homeless person before, but I try to keep a couple packages of peanut butter crackers in my car. That way, if they’re really hungry, I helped them. And that way, if they just want to buy drugs or other bad stuff, they didn’t scam me into helping them.

I’ve been known to give money from time to time but would rather give food. The reason being that you don’t know what the money is being used for. You don’t know why they’re homeless. You don’t know where they sleep and who they speak to. Anyone can tell you they’re not gonna buy drugs, but do you really know what they’re using the money for?
If they’re hungry, bring them to a restaurant and pay for whatever they wanna eat. It’s pointless to save money when your on the streets because if you have a nice jacket on while your homeless buddies have crappy second-hand stuff that seems to be deteriorating, there are people who are desperate enough to beat the guy with the nice jacket. You have no idea what happens on the streets and many of them do get desperate. You don’t know who is lying and who’s honest and many of them actually have a place to stay and a job, but they’re not obligated to tell you anything.
They can’t use that much on the streets. If you know of anyone who is living on the streets, ask them what they’d like to have. Save the money and buy it for them. Be careful who you trust, though. There are many people with an agenda. It’s not written on their forehead.
