What is the difference between 403B plans and 401k?

401k
Peggy Pirate asked:

People at work have been complaining that the companys retirement plan sucks. We have 403b matching up to 3% and they put another 3percent without us having to do anything. Most people don’t do it. All they have to do is open the accound and they get 3 percent free but they don’t.
Now they are asking the company for 401k plans and the company refused saying we already have a really good plan and you can do it on your own if you want.

So why do they think 401K plans are so great? I’m thinking it is just them being stupid.

401k
That One Guy asked:

I’m 23 years old, and currently have 100% of my 401k in stock-based mutual funds. I’m worried that if the market comes down, I’ll be out a sizable chunk of my retirement money if all of it is in stocks/mutual funds.

My plan offers a few highly-rated bond funds. Would having a bond fund help bear-proof my portfolio a little?

If you think it wouldn’t be a bad idea for me to add a bond fund, what percentage of my contributions should be going into it?

Thanks for any insight you can give!

How much will i be penalized if i close my 401k?

I have a 401k from a place i worked at 2 years ago. I since have gone back to school and am aiming at my master, possibly doctorate. I am 24 and live in south florida. My 401k has $2841.28 currently. What would i get back if i closed it and took my money? How would i got about getting it?
I need the money because my gorlfriend and i decided to buy a townhouse and i need money for the down payment. I would keep it in but i desperately need the money.
